Grant Guidelines

Since its inception in 1997, The Brownsville Community Foundation has awarded almost $5 million in donor directed grants in the areas of education, economic development, health, housing, the arts, historical preservation and the environment.

The Brownsville Community Foundation has a competitive grants cycle where grant requests from organizations in Brownsville are reviewed and may receive funding from the Foundation's unrestricted fund or from donor-advised funds.  Grant guidelines and information about applying are below.

With the announcement of BCF’s new interest in building a strong collaborative framework within the non-profits of our community, we will look most favourably on grant proposals written in collaboration by two or more non-profits or a non-profit and another agency/group such as a school, museum, hospital or other agency/group involved in activities covered by the Foundation’s areas of interest.

Brownsville Community Foundation Grant Criteria:

  1. Does the project support the mission of the Foundation?
  2. Does the proposed project support the mission of the applicant organization?
  3. Does the proposed project fall within the Foundation's 2015 grant making target areas (education; health; historic preservation and education; nature, science and the environment; arts and culture; and housing and economic development)?
  4. Is the proposed project innovative and practical?
  5. Does the proposed project improve the applicant organization’s capacity to serve residents?
  6. Does the proposed project leverage many sources of financial and volunteer support?
  7. Does the proposed project involve cooperative efforts by multiple organizations to minimize duplication?
  8. Will the proposed project be effectively managed and sustainable over time?
  9. Is the proposed project for charitable purposes and is the applicant tax-exempt (or have applied for tax-exempt status) under Sections 501(c)(3) or 170(b)(1)(a)(vi) of the Internal Revenue Code.  OR is the grant a “pass through” to a 501(c)3 organization to another organization without tax-exempt status?
  10. Does the applicant organization have local governance in the form of a board of directors or advisory committee and local program management?

The Brownsville Community Foundation invites organizations to submit a Grant Proposal to describe how they would serve the Brownsville community by addressing one of the Foundation's areas of interest in a collaborative way. The amount of the request should not exceed $10,000 with implementation and completion of a project lasting no more than twelve months.

If your organization’s mission and proposed project match the funding priorities of the Brownsville Community Foundation for this grant round, please complete a Grant Proposal by following the instructions listed on the main page of the Receive tab on the website. Please be advised that the Foundation will give preference to collaborative requests.
