COVID-19 Update: A Message from The Brownsville Community Foundation

Dear Friend,

As we remain monitoring developments relating to COVID-19, we hope that our community will all stay healthy and safe.

This situation is certainly not static and will continue to impact our communities in ways yet developed. Yet, we rest in the knowledge that we have incredible people like you in the world who are compassionate, resilient, and who consistently give back. We hope that you will continue to depend on The Brownsville Community Foundation as a resource in any way that we can be and that you will continue to be generous to the organizations that mean the most to you, as the charitable sector will need it.

In line with CDC recommendations, we are suspending work on our initiative The Big Give Brownsville through May 31, 2020 and then until further notice so that our nonprofits do not feel the need to go out into the public for that reason.

Melanie Davis-Jones from the Center for Disaster Philanthropy wrote an article outlining ways you can help local nonprofits during this trying time.

Thank you for your continued support for our community.

Sincerely,

The Board of Directors of The Brownsville Community Foundation

The Big Give Application

The Big Give was a community initiative sponsored and directed by

the Brownsville Community Foundation for five years.

Once a year, Brownsville’s “The Big Give Brownsville” was held citywide. The Big Give Brownsville was a 24-hour day of giving benefitting charities across the city and fostering charitable giving by encouraging Brownsville residents to give where they live.
Unlike other fundraising initiatives, Brownsville’s Big Give promoted personal giving to all of the participating nonprofits equally through its unique and highly visible live and online platforms. In addition to encouraging continued support to Brownsville’s favorite causes and campaigns, the Big Give Brownsville introduced donors to new nonprofits and causes attracting first-time donations.

All participating nonprofits were registered 501 (c) (3) organizations eligible to participate and receive donations from the 24 hours event. Brownsville Independent School District high schools participated through a partnership with The Brownsville Community Foundation and The Brownsville Foundation for Health and Education an initiative called Youth in Philanthropy (YIP).
Our first ever Big Give Brownsville was held on May 6, 2017, donors and participating nonprofits and public high schools were encouraged to attend the giving day celebrations. A kickoff rally and celebration for the giving day took place at the event headquarters, the Brownsville Museum of Fine Art. Here, the Big Give Brownsville’s leadership and elected school officials spoke on the philanthropic impact and importance of Brownsville’s Big Give. Later in the day, donors and the community-at-large were invited to stop by the official headquarters and there was a conclusion celebration.
The Brownsville Big Give promoted belief in the power of each person to make a positive difference in our community. The Big Give celebrated that positive impact and promoted charitable giving by providing a live and an online platform through which to support your favorite nonprofits or search for new causes. The Brownsville Community Foundation is now creating some new initiatives…stay tuned!!

Non-Profit Expectations

Expectations for Big Give Participants

  1. All nonprofits must apply to participate in the Big Give each year. Each nonprofit must complete an application by the published deadline. The application is on the Big Give Brownsville website: http://www.biggivebrownsville.org/ and the Brownsville Community Foundation website: http://www.brownsvillecommunityfoundation.org/
  2. Any nonprofit who was selected the previous year and met their responsibilities to the Big Give Initiative will be considered for participation first.
  3. There will be a limit of 25 participating nonprofits in any single year.
  4. Whenever there is an opening because of a nonprofit electing not to participate again or because a nonprofit no longer qualifies to participate, a new participant will be selected.
  5. Each nonprofit accepted as a participant will be required to pay an administration fee (amount to be announced).  These funds are for signs, printouts, publicity or any other costs involved in staging the event.  Any remaining funds will be added to the total amounts given to the nonprofits at the end of The Big Give.
  6. All participating nonprofits must attend an orientation.  At the orientation the complete requirements will be discussed.  These include but are not limited to: number of volunteers, sponsorship solicitations, meetings, etc. Each nonprofit must then sign a letter of commitment.
  7. The Brownsville Community Foundation will be offering the Big Give participants a series of workshops to help promote our collaboration in philanthropy.
